The Environment of Management

Walmart Part Two

Walmart went global and it is the fastest growing business. Walmart’s retail establishing with the Chinese consumers in 2004. Walmart operated 39 stores in China. Walmart’s in foreign countries have different food in their super Walmart because of cultural differences. Walmart meets the demands of their consumers by adding local flavors. Walmart has developed an ethical standards program to create a higher product and quality and lower products costs. Policing the workplaces of international venders is a huge task but Walmart executives say it is a necessary one.

Study Case

1. Which market entry strategy is Walmart primarily using to enter foreign markets, and why has management chosen this approach?

Walmart is using direct direct investing to foreign markets. Walmart has chosen this approach because the company’s goal is the same in every area of the world. The primary objective is to save people money so they can live a little better. Their goal in every market they operate is not only to deliver products at great value, but also to ensure that all of the products we sell are made in an ethical and sustainable way.

2. What challenges do Walmart China managers encounter in the international business environment?

Managers at Walmart should be focus in current cultural differences and developed an Ethical Standards Program to audit suppliers and ensure the ethical procurement of goods. The Ethical Standards Program can help compay’s to analyzing our expectations that our suppliers must compensate all workers with wages and overtimes premiums and benefits that meet or exceed local legal standards, local industry standards, or collective agreements, whichever are higher. Managers not only bring sustainable and positive change to working condition in factories, we also help build ladders to a better life in the countries where we are sourcing.

3. Which of Walmart sustainability initiatives do you believe will greatest positive impact on China? Explain.

I think Walmart will have a positive impact on China by having a social responsible business is a simple good business by reducing waste and energy cost and paving a path to higher profits for all. Also, being able to go in and work with individual factories were instead of costing them more money to do it the right way, the factory is actually able to save cost by doing it the right way.

Planning

Walmart Part Three

Planning is one of the most important elements in business management. Good planning ensures that an organization is able to compete and survive in the market. It is thus all management activities such as organizing, controlling and leadership is closely linked with planning activities. Without planning activities, it is not triggered an organization. After years of putting in yellow happy face, Walmart stores are getting an extreme makeover. Walmart customers who've witnessed the big reveal at the grand reopening across the country, the changes are dramatic.

The unveiling of Walmart’s next generation stores is part of the strategic plan “Project Impact”. The nationwide remodelling effort aims to improve the Walmart shopping experience and increase sale was announced in 2008. 70% of U.S stores will undergo by the end of 2014 and the reaming renovations will wrap up in 2014 as according to the project rollout schedule. Project Impact was an idea of the recent financial crisis in U.S. U.S economy sagged , higher income consumers began shopping Walmart to take advantage of low price. Castro-Wright’s team slashed 15% of store inventory, lowered shelves for an open line of vision and shuffled departments for easier shopping. With fewer products in stores, Walmart must be more selective about which product to carry and more committed to selling in higher volume. Walmart also loading up on hot gadgets and the home entertainment section is adding 3D TVs.  Project Impacts keys in ten important words, “Save Money, Live Better”, “Win, Play, Show” and “Fast, Friendly, Clean”. Walmart’s planner are seeking to boost store efficiency by connecting in-store merchandising with back-end logistics.

In conclusion, the managers of Walmart must be alert to the environment of business  to achieve the goal of company. Besides, they also must follow the process in decision making to make sure that decision will incur the benefit to company. Walmart management should also be made systematic and strategic planning to ensure that their companies are able to compete in the business world. This is so because the strategic planning and rational will always ensure that employees are on track in achieving organizational goals.

Study Case

1. How does managerial planning for Project Impact take place at different levels within the organization?

Planning encompasses defining the organization's objectives or goals, establishing an overall strategy for achieving these goals, and developing a comprehensive hierarchy of plan to integrate and coordinate activities. (Stephen P. Robbins., 1994, Page. 187) in the organization planning activities undertaken by the management of the company. A plan is a blueprint for goal achievement and specifies the necessary resource allocated, schedules, tasks and other actions. (Richard L. Daft, 2012, Page. 186) Goals and plans which consists of four stages, namely the mission statement, strategic goals or plans (senior management), tactical goals or plans (middle management) and operational goals or plans (lower management ).

Project Impact, a state of the US economy deteriorating, while high-income consumers are increasingly causing costumer start shopping at Walmart result of the low prices offered. Environment that is constantly changing causes Walmart management decided to revamp to create a favourable business climate. Matter to binding consumer loyalty to Walmart. The goal of Project Impact is to create a better environment and economic transformation that emphasizes customer loyalty.

Castro-Wright, Executive Vice Chairman of Walmart, senior management was setting a strategic goal or plan to increase consumer loyalty. He got the idea to renovate stores in the United States by expanding lanes, reducing fixtures, improve signage and add natural light. It is to create a more customer friendly. These three initiatives are called "Save Money, Live Better", "Win, Play, Show" and "Fast, Friendly, Clean" to make sure they can archive that goal.
Next step is recognize the tactical set goals or plans managed by middle management. Research results Castro-Wright, "Customers on average spend 21 minutes in the store and we need to make it easier for customers during the period". Castro-Wright's team slashed 15% of store inventory, lowered for an open line of vision, and shuffled departments for easier shopping.

Lower management also plays as important role. They need to determine the action steps that need to be taken to achieve operational goals and to support tactical plans. For this case the Impact Project, the changes made are put in the middle Receptionist pharmacy stores. This is to maximize the demand for prescription drugs for $ 4, the needs of retail has moved backwards, encouraging customers to find items on their way to the hall and closet shelves this review is centrally located, gesturing match head with a target and get rid of it at Walmart promotions Super lane, "Action Alley".

2. Using the concept of strategic management and core competence, explain why Walmart is scaling back on "cheap chic" fashion apparel in its next-generation remodelled stores.

Strategic action plans define the steps by which the company intends to attain strategic goals. (Richard L. Daft, 2012, Page. 190) From the aspect of strategic management for "cheap chic" fashion apparel, Walmart tried to boost sales of goods. With fewer products in store, Walmart must be more selective about which products to carry and more committed to selling in higher volume. To increase store sales using fewer stock items, Walmart is loading up on hot gadgets and home entertainment section also is adding. But many product lines, such Walmart's flagging "cheap chip" designer apparel, are getting the axe.

Core competence is a business activity that an organization does particularly well in comparison to competitors. (Richard L. Daft, 2012, Page. 661) Efficiency is a key competitive advantage in the aspect of the competition in the business world. This is so because the company obtained an expertise that competitors do not have. In this case (cheap chic), Walmart performance decreases. This problem is caused Walmart does not provide the products (cheap chic fashion apparel) better than other competitors.

3. What started the decision-making process that led to the overhaul of Walmart's US stores? What common errors in decision-making could thwart the success of Project Impact?

Decision making is the process of identifying problems and opportunities and then resolving them. (Richard L. Daft, 2012, Page. 238) In this case, Castro-Wright as vice chairman of Walmart stores make decision to cut in the merchandise might be the answer for this question. This problem is caused her concern to ensure customers easy to find items in stores through merchandise. This item has been reducing customers choice to buy something at Walmart. The effect of the action, has caused customers will find other stores that offer many options and purchase goods from Walmart.

In this Project Impacts case, common errors in decision-making that could thwart the success of this project are being influenced by initial impressions, overconfidence, and seeing what you want to see.
The initial response also affects the decision-making process. For example in the case of Walmart is the result of their research found that the average consumer only spent 21 minutes to shopping and to facilitate their search for the goods, they had cut the items in the store but the matter has led to a reduction in choice of goods in shops.

There are too confident in making decisions. If too confident in the decision-making process will also be lethal. Few managers are confident in predicting uncertain situation that ultimately leads to failure. For example, Project Impact is an idea that was born as a result of the financial crisis and the US economic situation is not stabilized and declined. More customers, especially in the higher income start shopping at Walmart. Walmart assumed the management of such conditions will prevail. Market conditions is a matter that cannot be predicted.

Finally, errors occur frequently make decisions is to look at what you want to see. In the case of Walmart, the Castro-Wright, would like to take the opportunity associated with current economic issues in the United States. He thought that things happen is the opportunity to refuse to be responsible for the planning and initiatives to improve the Walmart shopping experience and increase sales. But things did not go according to plan coldness. This is so because these initiatives will only limit the choice of products and are engaging in risky trade-offs for at Walmart merchandising strategy.

Organizing

Walmart Part Four

Walmart has ranked high on Fortune magazine’s list of “most admired companies”. Walmart is the one company that can creates more jobs to society. Before advancing to salaried management position, this company will recruits from within- a full 75% of store managers joined the company as hourly associates that the employee satisfied with this situation. Furthermore, management’s commitment to diversity is widely recognized among professional organizations-on gender diversity alone Walmart has received coveted kudos.
Based on the articles of “World’s Top Employer Ranks High on Diversity and Employee Satisfaction-But Not Everyone Hearts Walmart”, it shows that there has some serious issue that Walmart cannot avoid. In 2000, Betty Dukes complained that she was unfairly reprimanded and denied opportunities to advance in the company. Five other female workers joined Dukes lawsuit in 2001 to against Walmart on the issue of gender discrimination by the company even though Walmart report that Dukes is having clashed with her female supervisor and break down the rule of lunch-break policy. Dukes v. Walmart is now a national lawsuit representing over 1.6 million female workers after district judge gave the Dukes case “class action” status.  Walmart denied violations of the civil right of the six female employees, but the individual cases are not on trial in a class action suit. Female workers claimed that women, as a class, do not receive pay and promotion equal to men. In Walmart’s immediate context, disparities in pay or promotion may also be attributable to retail-related trends. Although the Dukes case had its astronomical $500 billion penalty, it is still a potential company killer. Hope that can dealing with individual cases, Walmart has appealed the class-action designation to the U.S. Supreme Court and the Dukes trial is scheduled to resume in 2011 or 2012. In the end, high-powered law firms, not Betty Dukes, have the most to gain from the lawsuit.
In conclusion, Walmart should use a new diversity initiative that is multicultural teams. Multicultural teams are made up of members from diverse national racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Discrimination should not occur in Walmart to avoid employees not satisfied with the company. Walmart should be fair to female worker so that Walmart can look into the female advantage.

Study Case

1.Why does Walmart prefer to recruit new store managers from its large pool of hourly associates?
Walmart prefer to recruit new store managers from its large pool of hourly associates because they have been with the company and might have been trained of some knowledge of soft skill, hard skill etc.  for a while and may know than someone who has never worked there before are Walmart company preference. This is because they want those who have the clear idea of how they run the company and do not want new people who will require more salary that what they are currently paying. Internal candidates have higher success rates due to their familiarity with corporate culture, so recruiting from this large pool is Walmart’s belief in being more effectives.

2.Explain how Walmart’s employee diversity benefits the organization. What are some challenges of diversity?

Happier and healthier work environment will usually evolve and find diversity to be beneficial in solving many workplace issues and possibly foster innovations. When a company has created a positive culture, they usually encourage training, mentoring and education. These will add value to both management and the workforce while developing healthier relationship internally. Externally, the positive changes should translate into a company customer want to do business with. However, to get to this point, power struggles and barriers created by company cultures and politics must be identified and then become a priority for management to change. Therefore, diversity can work to the benefit of a company if management creates the right environment and empowers theirs employees with the tools to succeed. The challenges of diversity in the workplace are tied directly to the culture and politics of the workplace. Walmart’s has to nurture an environment conducive to drawing out the talents diversity offers. Without the support management, diversity is only a world and concept.

3.What federal laws govern the main legal issue raised in Duke v Walmart?

Current and former employees lost a lawsuit against Walmart in 2000 when the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the Ninth Circuits certification in a class action. A lot of money was at stake when the largest employer in the U.S. Walmart, with over a million employees attracted extensive media attention. The practice of letting local manager make subjective decision about pay and promotion made women employees allege that Walmart was victimizing them.

Walmart Part Five

Walmart are the world's largest company by revenue, including the biggest private  employer in the world with over 2 million employees, and the largest retailer in the world. Conner had joined Walmart as a temporary sales associate only a decade earlier, and now she was responsible for turning a 176,000 square foot warehouse. The newly minted manager got to work recruiting 350 new associates, and Conner initiated all hires with the same cheer she herself learned a decade earlier. The message to the new employees is clear that is stick with Walmart and you’re going places.

In conclusion, Walmart is very concerned with their employees. This is because the results and characteristics of an employee it is very important to achieve a goal of a company and an organization. Chairman or manager was also very instrumental in managing an organization and shows good characteristics to serve as an example to employees. Therefore, Walmart is concerned with their customers too, the concept is “customer is number one, always”.

Study Case

The personality traits does Walmart look for in a job candidates is with “open door” policy. Walmart encourage all associates to speak freely, share concerns, sporting, not “free rider” and express ideas for improving daily operations. Besides that, Walmart also treat all discussions fairly with an open minded.
Moreover, wrong perceptions lead managers to hire the wrong people is when managers always listen to the associates and think that they’re the best idea generators. The newly minted manager got to work recruiting 350 new associates, and Conner initiated all hires with the same cheer she herself learned a decade earlier. The message to the new employees is clear that is stick with Walmart and you’re going places.

Futhermore, if lack and don’t have some motivation in an organization or company, employees will not feel fun to go to work, employees late come to work, the work environment will not be regular, and most importantly is employees will be making tasks or work with casualness. Its the impact of an organization or company goals. So manager should must show a good charateristic, the motivation and must give some rewarded for employess.
